Valley of Flowers happens during the monsoon. Every item in your bag should be chosen with that single fact in mind: it will rain, things will get wet, and the trail will be slippery.

We live 24 km from Govindghat and have helped dozens of trekkers prepare for this trek. This is what actually matters.

The Non-Negotiables

These are the items that make or break your trek:

Waterproof Jacket

Not water-resistant. Waterproof. A proper rain jacket with sealed seams is the single most important item. It will rain every day. Budget: ₹2,000–5,000 for something that works.

Trekking Shoes

Ankle-height, waterproof, with aggressive tread. The trail from Govindghat to Ghangaria is stone steps — wet stone steps in monsoon. Slippery. If your shoes do not grip wet rock, you will struggle.

Do NOT wear sports shoes, sneakers, or sandals. We see this every season and it ends in blisters, falls, or both.

Rain Cover for Backpack

Your bag will get rained on for hours. A rain cover is essential. Alternatively, line the inside of your bag with a heavy-duty garbage bag — cheaper and equally effective.

Trekking Poles

Optional for the Valley of Flowers day walk. Essential for Hemkund Sahib. The descent is 1,280 metres of steep stone steps — poles save your knees. Available for rent at Govindghat (₹100–200/day).

Clothing

What to Wear

  • Base layer: Moisture-wicking t-shirt (synthetic or merino, not cotton)
  • Mid layer: Fleece or light down jacket (Ghangaria is cold at night, Hemkund is genuinely cold)
  • Outer layer: Waterproof jacket (see above)
  • Legs: Quick-dry trekking pants. Rain pants over them during heavy rain.
  • Socks: Merino or synthetic trekking socks. Carry 2–3 pairs. Wet feet cause blisters.
  • Hat: Waterproof wide-brim hat or a cap under your jacket hood

What NOT to Wear

  • Cotton anything (takes forever to dry)
  • Jeans (heavy, cold when wet)
  • Flip-flops on the trail (we have seen it)

What to Leave Behind

Trek light. You are carrying everything on your back for 14 km uphill.

  • Heavy luggage: Leave suitcases and extra clothes at your hotel or at Vaadi. Trek with a daypack only.
  • Laptop/tablet: You will not need it. There is no WiFi at Ghangaria.
  • Expensive jewellery: The trail is muddy. Leave it behind.
  • Too much food: Ghangaria has basic restaurants. Carry snacks and one packed lunch for the valley day.
  • Ego about rain: It will rain. Accept it. Pack accordingly.

If you are staying at Vaadi before and after the trek, we are happy to store your extra luggage safely at the property.

What You Can Buy Locally

Govindghat has a few trekking shops that sell and rent:

  • Trekking poles: ₹100–200/day rent
  • Rain ponchos: ₹100–300
  • Basic rain jackets: ₹500–1,000 (quality varies)
  • Walking sticks: ₹200–400
  • Gloves, caps, socks

Do not rely on Govindghat for serious gear. Bring your waterproof jacket and shoes from the city. The locally available rain ponchos tear easily on the trail.

Altitude and Health

  • Ghangaria: 3,049m — mild altitude symptoms (headache, breathlessness) possible
  • Valley of Flowers: 3,658m — moderate altitude
  • Hemkund Sahib: 4,329m — genuine high altitude

Acclimatisation tips:

  • Spend a night at altitude before the trek. Vaadi at 2,500m is ideal.
  • Drink 3–4 litres of water per day
  • Walk slowly, especially above 3,000m
  • Carry Diamox (125mg twice daily) as a precaution for Hemkund
  • Descend immediately if symptoms worsen (severe headache, vomiting, confusion)

The One-Bag Approach

Here is how experienced trekkers pack for VoF:

  1. Leave city bags at Vaadi (or your hotel in Rishikesh/Govindghat)
  2. Trek with one 30–40L daypack containing clothes for 2–3 days, rain gear, and essentials
  3. Wear your heaviest items (trekking shoes, rain jacket) instead of packing them
  4. Hire a porter at Govindghat if your bag is still too heavy (₹1,000–1,500 to Ghangaria)

The lighter you walk, the more you enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a sleeping bag?

Not usually. Ghangaria lodges provide blankets (heavy wool quilts). If you run cold, a lightweight sleeping bag liner adds warmth without bulk.

Can I rent a tent?

The national park does not allow camping inside Valley of Flowers. All trekkers stay in Ghangaria lodges.

What shoes should I buy?

A mid-cut waterproof trekking boot with Vibram or similar grip sole. Brands that work well in India: Quechua (Decathlon), Wildcraft, Woodland. Budget: ₹3,000–6,000. Break them in before the trek.

Is there phone charging at Ghangaria?

Generator-powered electricity is available at most lodges for a few hours in the evening. Carry a power bank.

How much cash should I carry?

Minimum ₹5,000 per person. There are no ATMs in Ghangaria. Cash is needed for lodge rooms, meals, porter/pony hire, permits, and tips.
