If you are planning a trip to Valley of Flowers, the accommodation question is simple: where do you sleep the night before and after the trek? The answer is less simple, because the options range from spartan to surprisingly comfortable — depending on how far you are willing to look.
We will be honest about every option, including our own.
Option 1: Ghangaria (The Base Camp)
Altitude: 3,049m
Distance from Valley of Flowers: 4 km
Distance from Govindghat: 14 km (trek only, no road)
Ghangaria is a tiny settlement that exists almost entirely to serve trekkers heading to Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. It is the only accommodation option within walking distance of the valley.
What to Expect
- Rooms: Basic. Plywood walls, thin mattresses, shared or attached bathrooms. Hot water is bucket-only (when available). Electricity comes from generators and is intermittent.
- Food: Simple North Indian meals. Dal, rice, chapati, Maggi. Functional, not memorable.
- Price: ₹500–1,500 per room per night. The GMVN guesthouse is at the higher end.
- Booking: Walk-in only during lean periods. In August, rooms fill up by early afternoon — arrive early or book through a tour operator.
- Mobile signal: Almost none. No WiFi.
Who Should Stay Here
Trekkers who want to maximise time near the valley and minimise logistics. If you are doing both VoF and Hemkund Sahib, you will need at least one night here.
The Reality
Ghangaria is functional. It is not comfortable. The rooms are cold and damp during monsoon. The food is repetitive. The shared bathrooms are a lottery. But it is right there at the trailhead, and for many trekkers, that is what matters.
Option 2: Vaadi (The Mountain Homestay)
Altitude: 2,500m
Distance from Govindghat: 24 km (45-minute drive)
Distance from Joshimath: 7 km
Vaadi is a handcrafted mountain homestay in a pine forest near Auli. It is not on the standard trekker circuit, which is exactly the point.
What to Expect
- Rooms: Two cabins — Forest View and Sky View. Warm wood interiors, proper beds, mountain views, attached bathrooms with hot water.
- Camping: Bring your own tent or rent one of ours (₹3,000/day). Pitch it in the forest clearing with mountain views, use the common bathrooms, and eat from the kitchen. A proper mountain camping experience without roughing it completely.
- Food: Home-cooked Garhwali meals. Mandua ki roti, pahadi dal, kafuli, fresh vegetables from the valley. Every meal is made from scratch in the kitchen.
- Price: Approx ₹6,000 per person per night (cabin). Tent rental ₹3,000/day. Meals charged separately (breakfast ₹500, lunch/dinner ₹700 per person).
- Mobile signal: Basic WiFi. Intermittent mobile (Jio/BSNL).
- Extras: We arrange transport to Govindghat, local guides, and can plan your full VoF itinerary.
Who Should Stay Here
Trekkers who want to sleep properly before and after the trek. Couples. Families combining VoF with a mountain holiday. Campers who want a forest setting without giving up access to home-cooked food. Anyone who values good food and quiet over proximity to the trailhead.
The Honest Trade-off
Vaadi is 24 km from Govindghat — a 45-minute drive. That means an earlier start on trek day compared to staying in Govindghat. But you gain: a real bed (or a tent under the pines), a hot shower, meals that are worth talking about, and a forest outside your window.
After two or three nights in Ghangaria, the drive back to Vaadi feels like returning to civilisation.
Option 3: Govindghat (The Gateway)
Altitude: 1,828m
Distance from Valley of Flowers: 18 km (14 km trek + 4 km in valley)
Distance from Joshimath: 25 km
Govindghat is the last town on the road before the trek begins. It sits at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Lakshman Ganga rivers.
What to Expect
- Rooms: Better than Ghangaria. A few proper hotels with attached bathrooms, hot water, and electricity. The Gurudwara Gobind Dham offers free accommodation (basic, dormitory-style) for all visitors.
- Food: More variety. Dhabas and restaurants along the main road. The gurudwara serves langar (free meals).
- Price: ₹800–2,500 per room per night for hotels.
- Mobile signal: Decent (Jio, Airtel).
Who Should Stay Here
Trekkers arriving late in the day who want to start the trek to Ghangaria first thing in the morning. Also a good option for the night before departure back to Rishikesh.
The Reality
Govindghat is a transit town. It is not a place to linger. The hotels are adequate, the food is fine, and the main point is proximity to the trailhead. You will probably not remember the room, but you will remember the river.
Option 4: Joshimath (The Bigger Town)
Altitude: 1,890m
Distance from Govindghat: 25 km
Distance from Vaadi: 20 km
Joshimath is the nearest proper town. It has ATMs, pharmacies, gear shops, and a wider range of hotels. It is also the gateway to Auli and the starting point for several other treks.
What to Expect
- Rooms: Mid-range hotels with all amenities. Some with mountain views.
- Food: Restaurants, dhabas, bakeries. More choice than Govindghat.
- Price: ₹1,000–4,000 per room per night.
Who Should Stay Here
Trekkers who want town amenities — ATMs, pharmacies, shops — before heading to the trail. Also useful if you are arriving via Badrinath and connecting to VoF.
The Reality
Joshimath is a hill town, not a hill station. It is functional and well-connected but not especially atmospheric. The land subsidence issues of recent years have affected parts of the town, though most tourist areas remain unaffected.

Our Recommendation
Before the trek: Stay at Vaadi. Rest properly, eat well, acclimatise at 2,500m. Leave heavy luggage at the property and trek with a daypack. If you are on a tighter budget, pitch a tent and still eat from the kitchen.
During the trek: One or two nights at Ghangaria (unavoidable if doing both VoF and Hemkund Sahib).
After the trek: Return to Vaadi. Hot shower, home-cooked dinner, soft bed (or your tent under the stars), silence. Your body will thank you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do Valley of Flowers as a day trip without staying at Ghangaria?
Not really. The 14 km trek from Govindghat to Ghangaria plus the 8 km round trip in the valley is too much for one day. You need at least one night at Ghangaria.
Should I book Ghangaria in advance?
In August (peak season), it is wise to book through a tour operator or arrive by early afternoon. In July and September, walk-in is usually fine.
Can I camp at Vaadi?
Yes. Bring your own tent or rent one of ours for ₹3,000/day. You get a forest clearing with mountain views, access to common bathrooms, and can order meals from the kitchen. It is a proper camping experience with the safety net of a staffed property.
Is Vaadi suitable as a VoF base camp?
Vaadi is not a traditional base camp — it is 24 km from Govindghat. But as a place to stay the night before and after the trek, it is the most comfortable option in the region. We arrange early morning transfers to Govindghat.
